Philip of Artois: A Brave Soldier
Philip was known for being a very skilled and energetic soldier. He showed his bravery in several battles and expeditions.
Capturing Bourbourg
In 1383, Philip led his forces to capture the town of Bourbourg. This town was held by the English at the time. His victory was an important moment for France.
Journey to the Holy Land
Philip also went on a special trip, called a pilgrimage, to the Holy Land. This was a religious journey to places important in Christianity. While there, he was captured by Barquq, who was the Sultan of Egypt. A sultan is a powerful ruler, similar to a king. Philip was later set free thanks to the help of Jean Boucicaut and people from the city of Venice.
Expedition to Mahdia
In 1390, Philip joined a military trip led by Louis II, Duke of Bourbon. Their goal was to attack Mahdia, a city in North Africa. However, this expedition was not successful.
Constable of France
In 1393, Philip was given a very important job. He was made Constable of France. This was the highest military position in France at that time. It meant he was in charge of the entire French army.
The Battle of Nicopolis
As a leading crusader, Philip joined a large French army. They went to fight in the Battle of Nicopolis in 1396. This battle was part of a larger conflict against the Ottoman Empire. Sadly, Philip was captured during this battle. He later died while he was still a prisoner.
Philip's Family Life
On January 27, 1393, Philip married Marie. She was born in 1367 and passed away in 1434. Marie was the daughter of John, Duke of Berry. Philip and Marie had four children together:
- Philip (born 1393 – died December 23, 1397). He likely died before news of his father's death reached France. Even though he is buried as a Count of Eu, historians usually do not count him as a ruler.
- Charles (born 1394 – died 1472). He was captured during the famous Battle of Agincourt.
- Bonne (born 1396 – died September 17, 1425). She married two important noblemen. First, she married Philip II, Count of Nevers in 1413. Later, she married Philip III, Duke of Burgundy in 1424.
- Catherine (born 1397 – died between 1418 and 1422). She married John of Bourbon around 1416.
