Louis de Bourbon, often called Louis the Good, was an important French noble. He was born around 1337 and lived until 1410. Louis was the third Duke of Bourbon, a powerful title in France. He was also the Count of Clermont-en-Beauvaisis and the Lord of Beaujeu.
A Royal Life
Louis was the son of Peter de Bourbon and Isabella de Valois. His mother, Isabella, was the sister of King Philip VI of France. This meant Louis was related to the French royal family!
Louis became the Duke of Bourbon in 1356. This happened after his father, Duke Peter I, sadly died during the Battle of Poitiers. This battle was a major fight between France and England during the Hundred Years' War.
In 1390, Louis led a military trip called the Barbary Crusade. He worked with people from Genoa (a city in Italy) to fight against pirates. These pirates were causing trouble from the city of Mahdia in North Africa. Even though they tried hard, they couldn't capture the city. Louis passed away in Montluçon in 1410 when he was 73 years old.
Family and Children
On August 19, 1371, Louis married Anne of Auvergne. Anne was a Countess and came from an important family too. Together, Louis and Anne had four children:
- Catherine of Bourbon (born 1378), who died when she was young.
- John of Bourbon (1381–1434), who later became the Duke of Bourbon after his father.
- Louis of Bourbon (1388–1404), who was known as the Sieur de Beaujeu.
- Isabelle of Bourbon (1384 – after 1451).
