John of Bourbon was an important French noble who lived a long time ago, from 1381 to 1434. He became the Duke of Bourbon in 1410 and also the Duke of Auvergne in 1416. His parents were Louis II and Anne of Auvergne. From his mother, he also received the title of Count of Forez.

John lived during a time when France had a big civil war, called the Armagnac–Burgundian Civil War. He chose to support the Armagnac side against the Burgundians. Later, he was captured during a famous battle called the Battle of Agincourt. This battle happened in 1415. John was taken as a prisoner to London, England. Even though money was paid for his freedom, and promises were made, he sadly died in prison in 1434.

Family Life

In 1400, John married Marie, Duchess of Auvergne in Paris. Marie was the daughter of John, Duke of Berry. She inherited the title of Duchess of Auvergne from her father.

John and Marie had three sons:

  • Charles de Bourbon (1401–1456), who later became the Duke of Bourbon.
  • Louis of Bourbon (1403–1412), who was the Count of Forez. He passed away in Paris when he was young.
  • Louis de Bourbon (1405–1486), who became the Count of Montpensier.

John also had two children outside of his marriage:

  • Margaret, who married Rodrigo de Villandrando.
  • John, who became a bishop in a place called Puy.

John's Noble Titles

John of Bourbon held several important noble titles during his life. These titles showed his power and the lands he controlled.

He was:

  • The Duke of Bourbon from 1410 until his death in 1434.
  • The Duke of Auvergne from 1416 until his death.
