Charles of Artois, Count of Eu

Charles of Artois was an important French nobleman who lived a very long time, from 1394 to 1472. He was the son of Philip of Artois and Marie of Berry. When he was just three years old, in 1397, he became the Count of Eu, a title he held for 75 years until his death.

A Long Imprisonment

Charles of Artois faced a major challenge during his life. In 1415, when he was 21 years old, he fought in a famous battle called the Battle of Agincourt. During this battle, he was captured by the English army. He remained a prisoner for a very long time – 23 years! He was finally set free in 1438.

Family Life and Later Roles

After his release, Charles married twice. His first wife was Jeanne of Saveuse, whom he married in 1448. Sadly, she passed away the next year. In 1454, he married Helene of Melun. However, Charles did not have any children from either marriage.

Later in his life, Charles took on important roles for the King of France, Louis XI. In 1465, during a conflict known as the War of the Public Weal, he was appointed as the King's Lieutenant in regions like Normandy and Guyenne. He also became the Governor of Paris, which meant he was in charge of the city's defense and administration.

His Legacy

Charles of Artois was the very last male member of his family line, the House of Artois, to hold the title of Count of Eu. Because he had no children, his title passed to his nephew, John II, Count of Nevers, after his death in 1472.
