Becoming a Count
Philip became a count after his older brothers moved on to bigger roles. His brother, John the Fearless, became the Duke of Burgundy. Another brother, Anthony, became the Duke of Brabant. When they took over these larger areas, Philip took their previous titles. This is how he became the Count of Nevers and the Count of Rethel.
Philip's Family Life
Philip married twice during his life.
First Marriage and Children
In 1409, Philip married Isabelle de Coucy in a town called Soissons. Isabelle was the daughter of Enguerrand VII de Coucy. Sadly, Isabelle passed away in 1411. They had two children together:
- Philip of Nevers (born 1410)
- Margaret of Nevers (born 1411)
Second Marriage and Sons
Philip married again in 1413. His second wife was Bonne of Artois. They were married in a place called Beaumont-en-Artois. Bonne was the daughter of Philip of Artois, Count of Eu. Philip and Bonne had two sons who grew up to be important:
- Charles I, Count of Nevers (born 1414)
- John II, Count of Nevers (born before 1415)
Philip also had four other children, but their mothers were not his wives. These children are sometimes called "illegitimate" because their parents were not married.
The Battle of Agincourt
In 1415, England, led by King Henry V, invaded France. Philip's older brother, John the Fearless, was in a difficult position. He decided not to send his army to help the French king fight the English.
However, Philip II chose a different path. He joined the French army to defend his country. His brother Anthony also joined the fight. Both Philip and Anthony bravely fought in the Battle of Agincourt. This was a very famous and difficult battle. Sadly, both brothers were killed during the fighting on October 25, 1415.
After Philip's death, his son Charles became the new Count of Nevers.
