Robert Lodowick Stanton (born March 28, 1810, died May 23, 1885) was an important American leader. He was a minister in the Presbyterian Church, a teacher, and he ran colleges. He was the president of Miami University in Ohio from 1868 to 1871. He also led Oakland College in Mississippi.
Early Life and Education
Robert Lodowick Stanton was born on March 28, 1810. His hometown was Preston, Connecticut. His parents were Joseph and Susan Stanton. Robert's father made wool products and traded with the West Indies.
Robert had an older brother named Henry Brewster Stanton. Henry became a journalist and worked to end slavery. He wrote for many newspapers and gave speeches. Henry married Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who was a famous leader. She worked for women's rights, the right to vote, and to end slavery.
Robert Stanton went to the Oneida Institute in New York. Later, he studied at the Lane Theological Seminary in Ohio. He earned a special degree called a D.D. from Princeton University.
Career as a Leader
In 1839, Robert Stanton became a minister. He led churches in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Ohio. From 1851 to 1854, he was the second president of Oakland College. This college was connected to the Presbyterian Church.
From 1862 to 1866, he was a professor at Danville Theological Seminary in Kentucky. He taught about theology, which is the study of religious faith.
Robert Stanton became the president of Miami University in Ohio. He held this important position from 1866 to 1871. He was also chosen to be the leader, or moderator, of the main meeting of the Presbyterian Church. This was from 1866 to 1867.
Later Life and Legacy
Robert Stanton was a widower, meaning his wife had passed away. He had one son. He died on May 23, 1885, when he was 75 years old. He was traveling to London on a ship called the Nevada. He was buried at sea.
Today, a building at Miami University is named in his honor. It is called Stanton Hall.
