Robert Shedrick Mitchell (born March 31, 1900 – died May 1971) was a baseball player known as "Pud." He was a talented catcher in the Negro leagues during the 1920s. These leagues were professional baseball organizations for African American players.
Meet Robert 'Pud' Mitchell
Pud Mitchell was born in Sparta, Illinois. He had a twin brother named George Mitchell, who also became a professional baseball player. Both brothers loved the game and made a name for themselves in the Negro leagues.
Early Baseball Days
Pud Mitchell began his professional baseball career in 1923. He joined the Birmingham Black Barons, a team known for its skilled players. As a catcher, Pud played a very important role behind home plate. Catchers work closely with the pitcher, helping to guide the game and catch fast pitches.
Playing with His Twin Brother
In 1924, Pud Mitchell moved to a new team, the St. Louis Stars. This was a special year because he got to play alongside his twin brother, George. George was a pitcher, and Pud was his catcher. They were a "batterymate" pair, meaning they worked together as pitcher and catcher. It must have been amazing to play professional baseball with your own twin!
