Sparta is a city in Randolph County, Illinois, United States. In 2020, about 4,095 people lived there.
This city was a main filming spot for the 1967 movie In the Heat of the Night. A company that makes ammunition called Underwood Ammo has its main office and only location in Sparta.

Sparta's Printing History
After World War II, Sparta became famous as "Magazineland, U.S.A." This was because many printing factories were there. These factories printed most of the colorful comic books sold in the United States.
At its busiest time, a company called Spartan Printing employed up to 1,000 people. Later, big companies that distribute comics also built their warehouses in and around Sparta.
