Robert Quiroga (born October 10, 1969 – died August 16, 2004) was a talented American boxer. He became the International Boxing Federation (IBF) Super Flyweight champion. Robert held this important title from 1990 to 1993. He successfully defended his championship five times. Quiroga retired from boxing in 1995. He ended his career with an impressive record. He had 20 wins, 2 losses, and 11 knockouts (KOs). Robert Quiroga was a pioneer for his hometown. He was the very first world boxing champion from San Antonio, Texas.

Robert Quiroga's Boxing Career

Robert Quiroga started his professional boxing journey early. He made his first professional fight on March 16, 1987. At that time, he was only 17 years old.

Becoming a Champion

Quiroga quickly showed his skills in the ring. In his 12th professional fight, he won against Joey Olivo. Olivo was a former WBA light flyweight champion. Just two fights later, Quiroga achieved a major goal. He won the IBF Super Flyweight title. He earned this championship by defeating Juan Polo Perez.

Later in 1990, Quiroga defended his new title. He had successful victories against Vuyani Nene and Vincenzo Belcastro. These wins showed he was a strong champion.

Memorable Title Defenses

On June 15, 1991, Quiroga defended his IBF title for the third time. This fight took place at the HemisFair Arena in San Antonio. He faced an undefeated boxer named "Kid" Akeem Anifowoshe. It was a very tough and exciting fight. Quiroga won by a unanimous decision after twelve rounds. This fight was so intense that it was named the 1991 Ring Magazine Fight of the Year.

In the next year, 1992, Quiroga continued to defend his title. He defeated Carlos Mercado, who was also undefeated. He also won against Jose Ruiz, a former WBO Super Flyweight champion.

End of His Championship Reign

In 1993, Robert Quiroga's time as champion came to an end. He lost his title to Julio César Borboa. Quiroga returned to boxing in 1995. However, he lost his comeback fight by a close decision. After this, he retired from the sport.
