Robert Sara, born on June 9, 1946, is a famous former footballer from Austria. He played as a defender, which means his job was to stop the other team from scoring goals. Robert's younger brother, Josef, was also a footballer. Robert Sara is known for spending almost his entire career with one club, Austria Wien, and for playing for the Austrian national team.
Playing for Clubs
Robert Sara was born in Oberlainsitz, a small town in Austria. He became a true legend at Austria Wien, a very important football club. He stayed with this club for 20 years, which is a very long time!
He started playing professionally at age 19. During his time with Austria Wien, he helped them win many important trophies. He won nine league titles, which means his team was the best in Austria nine times. He also won six domestic cups.
In 1978, Robert Sara and his team played in a big European final, the Cup Winner's Cup Final. They played against Anderlecht but unfortunately lost the game 4–0. Robert Sara played 571 games in the Austrian top league. This is a record for the most appearances by any player in that league!
In 2001, Robert Sara was chosen to be part of Austria's Team of the Century. This shows how important he was to Austrian football history.
Playing for His Country
Robert Sara also played for the Austrian national team. His first game for Austria was in October 1965. It was a big match against England at Wembley Stadium, and Austria won 3–2.
He was the captain of the Austrian team that played in the 1978 FIFA World Cup finals. During this World Cup, he was part of a very famous game. Austria played against their big rivals, West Germany. Robert Sara made a key pass that led to Hans Krankl scoring the winning goal. Austria won the game 3–2. This match is often called The miracle of Córdoba because it was Austria's first win against West Germany in 47 years!
Robert Sara played a total of 55 games for the national team and scored three goals. His last game for Austria was a friendly match against Argentina in May 1980.
