Sir Robert Steward was born in 1617. He became a well-known figure in England during his lifetime. He was known for his work in law and government. He passed away in 1672.

Early Life and Education

Robert Steward was the third son of Thomas Steward. His family lived in a place called Barton Mills in Suffolk. Robert received a good education from a young age.

He went to Mildenhall Grammar School and then to Bury St Edmunds Grammar School. After that, he studied at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, starting in 1633. Later, in 1641, he joined Lincoln's Inn. This was a special place in London where people trained to become lawyers. He officially became a lawyer in 1651.

Serving the Public: His Career

Robert Steward had an important job in his hometown of King's Lynn. From 1660 until he died, he was the Recorder for the town.

What is a Recorder?

A Recorder was a legal officer, a bit like a judge, for a town or city. Their job was to help with legal matters and make sure laws were followed in the area. It was a very respected position.

A Member of Parliament

Sir Robert Steward was also a Member (MP). This means he was chosen by people to represent them in the Parliament of England. Parliament is where laws are made and important decisions for the country are discussed.

He represented two different areas during his time as an MP:

  • He was an MP for Thetford in 1659.
  • He then became an MP for Castle Rising from 1661 until June 1672.

Knighted for His Service

For his important work and service, Robert Steward was given a special honor. He was made a Knight on July 10, 1670. After this, he was known as Sir Robert Steward.
