Robert Ussher (1592–1642) was an important Irish leader in the 1600s. He served as the Provost (head) of Trinity College Dublin, a famous university. Later, he became a Bishop of Kildare, a senior church position.

Early Life and Education

Robert Ussher was born in 1592. He was the youngest son of Henry Ussher, who was the Archbishop of Armagh. Robert followed in his father's footsteps and attended Trinity College Dublin. He was a very good student.

He became a "fellow" (a senior academic member) at the college in 1611. He earned several degrees, including a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in 1612 and a Master of Arts (M.A.) in 1614. By 1615, he was even the vice-provost, helping to run the college.

Becoming Provost

In 1627, the Provost of Trinity College, Sir William Temple, passed away. There was a disagreement about who should take his place. Some senior teachers chose one person, but the junior teachers chose Robert Ussher. He was quickly sworn in as Provost.

However, the King's government had other plans. They wanted William Bedell to be the Provost instead. So, Robert Ussher had to step aside.

A few years later, in 1629, William Bedell became a Bishop. This meant the Provost position was open again. This time, Robert Ussher was chosen once more. His cousin, James Ussher, who was a very respected Archbishop, helped him get the job. Robert officially became Provost in January 1630.

Later Career and Death

As Provost, Robert Ussher was known for being a good speaker. He worked to protect the rights of Trinity College. He also encouraged the study of the Irish language, which was important at the time.

In 1634, Robert Ussher left his role as Provost. He was appointed Archdeacon of Meath, another important church position. The next year, in 1635, he became the Bishop of Kildare.

Robert Ussher passed away on September 7, 1642, when he was about 50 years old. He died in England, near a town called Ellesmere. Many people believed that the difficulties of the English Civil War, which was happening at the time, might have made him sick and led to his early death. He was buried in a chapel nearby. He was married to Jane Kynaston and had children.
