Robert C. Vowels was an important American economist. He was the leader, or Dean, of the School of Business at Atlanta University. He was also an early president of the National Economic Association, a group for economists.

Early Life and Learning

Robert C. Vowels was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He went to Howard University and earned two degrees there: a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a Master of Arts (MA). Later, he continued his studies and earned his highest degree, a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), from American University.

His Work and Contributions

After finishing his studies at Howard, Mr. Vowels worked at the public library system in Washington, D.C. He also taught economics at Howard University.

In 1961, something very important happened. Robert C. Vowels was one of the first four Black economists to get a job as an analyst at the United States Department of the Treasury. This department helps manage the country's money. This was a big step forward!

Later in his career, he became the Dean of the School of Business at Atlanta University. This meant he was in charge of the business school and helped guide many students.
