History of the Yerkes Family Home

William Yerkes was one of the first people to settle near Northville. He came to the area in 1826. His son, Robert Yerkes, was born in 1829. Robert spent most of his life working as a farmer.

Why Robert Yerkes Built the House

In the late 1860s, Robert Yerkes wanted his children to get a better education. So, he decided to move his family to Northville. In 1869, he hired a builder named John C. Macomber. Macomber built this beautiful house for the Yerkes family.

Life in the Yerkes House

Robert Yerkes moved into the house in 1870. He lived there for many years until he passed away in the 1910s. His family members continued to own the house for a long time. They still owned it at least until the 1970s.

Design of the Robert Yerkes House

The Robert Yerkes House is a great example of a style called Gothic Revival. This type of architecture was very popular in the Northville area in the late 1800s. It is one of the best and most original examples of this style.

Key Features of the House

The house has two stories and a smaller wing with one and a half stories. It sits on a strong foundation made of cut granite stone. The outside of the house is covered with wooden boards called clapboard. The original windows have four small panes of glass on the top and four on the bottom.

Gothic Revival Style Details

The Gothic style of the house is easy to see. It has two fancy gables on the front of the house. Gables are the triangular parts of a wall under a sloping roof. You can also see detailed scroll saw work on the eaves. Eaves are the parts of the roof that hang over the walls. There is also scroll saw work on the front porch, which adds to its unique look.
