Rocío Orsi Portalo (born in Madrid, Spain, on February 3, 1976 – died in Madrid, November 29, 2014) was a smart Spanish thinker. She was a philosopher, writer, and translator. She also taught philosophy at the Charles III University of Madrid (UC3M). Many people think she was one of the most important Spanish-speaking thinkers of her time.

Early Life and Education

Rocío Orsi went to Covadonga High School. She then studied philosophy at the Autonomous University of Madrid. In March 2006, she earned her Ph.D. from UC3M. Her main project, called a thesis, was about "Ti chre poiein, thought and action in Sophocles". This work later became her book, The Knowledge of Error.

Career and Research Work

Rocío Orsi started as a research fellow at UC3M in 1999. She became a professor there in 2004. She traveled and worked in many places. These included Paris, Cambridge, New York City (Columbia University), and Bologna, Italy. She was part of many research projects. She also helped start and run the Kóre Gender Studies Group.

She held important roles at UC3M. She was an assistant vice-dean for a faculty. She was also on the boards of several philosophy groups. These included the Academic Society of Philosophy and the Spanish Association of Ethics and Political Philosophy. She was also on the team that edited the journal Isegoría. Rocío Orsi was also active in public life. She was one of the first people to sign a public statement called Free and Equal.

Orsi studied many different areas of philosophy. She looked at the history of ideas. She also explored political and moral philosophy. She studied how we gain knowledge (epistemology) and gender studies. She was also interested in political economy. At first, she focused on how philosophy and literature are connected. She also looked at problems with knowledge and morals. Later, she became interested in the philosophy of history. Before she passed away, she planned to study ancient skepticism. This is a way of thinking that questions what we can truly know.

Her Legacy

Rocío Orsi passed away from cancer in 2014. To honor her, UC3M started the Rocío Orsi Prize in 2016. This award goes to the best master's degree project. It is given in the Faculty of Humanities, Communication and Documentation.
