The Rockland Trust Company building is a historic bank building located at 288 Union Street in Rockland, Massachusetts. It's a branch of the Rockland Trust Company bank. This building has a long history and is known for its special design.
The bank itself started in 1907. At first, it was in different offices across the street. Then, in 1917, this impressive building was built just for the bank.

About the Building's Design
This building is made of red bricks and has two main floors. It was designed by a famous architect from Boston named Thomas M. James. He was well-known for creating beautiful bank buildings.
How the Building Grew
Over the years, the building got bigger.
- In 1923, a single-story part was added.
- Later, in 1947, this addition was made taller, becoming two stories.
- Also in 1947, another new section with three stories was built.
All these new parts were also made with the same red bricks, matching the original building perfectly.
Special Features of the Outside
The main entrance of the building is set back a bit. It has two very large columns that stand tall. On either side of these columns, there are flat, column-like decorations called pilasters. These support a decorative band called an entablature. On top of that, there's a brick wall (a parapet) and a stone railing (a granite balustrade).
Recognized for Its History
The Rockland Trust Company building is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. This list includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history.
