Natural History
How the Park's Rocks Were Made
Long, long ago, about 500 million years ago, this area was covered by shallow seas. Sand settled at the bottom of these seas. This sand eventually turned into sandstone rock.
Much later, the Wisconsin River flowed right through here. It carved deep channels into the sandstone. Imagine a giant river cutting through rock! But the river changed its path. Now, it flows about 1.5 miles east of the park. This left the old river gorge exposed. You can see the rock walls it created. A small creek now flows through the park. It goes the opposite way the big river once did.
