High School Football Star
Rocky Hinds was a highly sought-after athlete. He graduated from St. Bernard High School in Los Angeles, California, in 2004. Many people thought he was one of the top ten high school quarterbacks in the entire country.
During his senior year, Rocky had a tough injury. He tore a ligament in his right knee, which ended his season early. Even with this injury, he still received many awards. These included Super Prep All-American and PrepStar All-American. He was also named to the PrepStar Top 100 Dream Team.
Scout.com ranked Rocky as the 18th best player at his position. In his junior year (2002), he was named the All-del Rey League Offensive MVP. He threw for 1,643 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also ran for 475 yards and 5 touchdowns.
Besides football, Rocky was also a talented track athlete. He ran the 100 meters in 10.47 seconds. He also won the 2003 CIF Division IV 100-meter race. He was great at the 200-meter dash, long jump, and high jump too. Many big colleges wanted him to play for them. These included USC, Arizona State, California, Nebraska, and UCLA.
College Football Journey
Playing for USC
Rocky Hinds received a football scholarship to the University of Southern California (USC). This happened after he visited the campus in his freshman year of high school. In 2004, Rocky was a "redshirt" freshman quarterback for USC. This means he practiced with the team but did not play in games. This allowed him to gain experience without using a year of his college eligibility.
Rocky became unhappy at USC because he was third on the team's depth chart. This meant two other quarterbacks, Matt Leinart and John David Booty, were ahead of him. Also, a new freshman quarterback, Mark Sanchez, was joining the team. Rocky decided to look at other colleges to transfer to. He thought about Texas. He eventually chose to transfer to UNLV.
Time at UNLV
Rocky joined UNLV in 2005 as part of a group of transfer students. Because of NCAA rules, he had to "redshirt" again in 2005. He could practice with the team but could not play in games.
In 2006, Rocky played in all 12 games for UNLV, starting 11 of them. In his very first game against Idaho State, he threw for 322 yards. He also had one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown. His first touchdown pass was a long 71-yard throw to Ryan Wolfe. By the end of the season, he had passed for 2,148 yards. This was the 8th highest in UNLV school history at the time.
Rocky was even considered a candidate for the Heisman Trophy in 2006. He was also part of the Rebel Leadership Committee. Before the 2007 season, Rocky had surgery on his right knee to fix a partially torn ACL. Even with this injury, he was still ranked as one of the best quarterbacks in college football. Sporting News said he had the strongest arm in the Mountain West conference. Unfortunately, due to injuries, Rocky did not play in his senior year.
