How Rocky Mountain Chocolate Started
Rocky Mountain Chocolate was started by Frank Crail and his friends Jim Hilton and Mark Lipinski. They opened their very first store on May 23, 1981. This store was on Main Avenue in Durango's Historic District, right next to the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
In 1982, Jim Hilton and Mark Lipinski left the business. Frank Crail then bought their shares. That same year, the company built a new factory in Durango. They also opened their first stores that were run by other people, called franchises. These first franchise stores were in Colorado Springs, Colorado and Park City, Utah.
