Rodríguez is located in southern Uruguay. It is in the San José Department. The town is on Route 45. This road is about 2 kilometers north of Route 11. Route 11 is another important road. Rodríguez is also about 18 kilometers west of Santa Lucía. A train track also goes through the town. This track connects Montevideo, San José, and Colonia.

Rodríguez has a special history. On July 19, 1909, it became a "Pueblo." This means it was officially recognized as a village. Later, on June 14, 1960, its status changed. It was then called a "Villa." A "Villa" is a small town. These changes were made by special laws.
