Sergio Rodríguez García (born on August 17, 1984), known to many as Rodri, is a Spanish former professional footballer. He played as a central defender, which means he was a key player in the defense of his team.

Rodri's Football Journey

Starting at FC Barcelona

Rodri was born in Mataró, a city near Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain. He grew up playing football in the famous FC Barcelona youth system. This is where many great players begin their careers.

He played for Barcelona's main team only twice in two seasons. His first game was on December 11, 2004. It was an away game against Albacete Balompié, which Barcelona won 2–1. Rodri played for just three minutes in that match.

Even though he didn't play much for the main team, Barcelona won the La Liga championship two years in a row. During this time, Rodri mostly played for FC Barcelona B, which is the reserve team.

Moving to Deportivo and Loan Spells

In the summer of 2006, Rodri joined Deportivo de La Coruña, a team from Galicia. He played only six games for them over two seasons.

To get more playing time, he was loaned to other clubs.

  • In January 2007, he went to UD Almería, a team in the Segunda División (the second division of Spanish football).
  • He then spent the entire 2007–08 season playing for Polideportivo Ejido, another second-division team.

In September 2008, Rodri was loaned again, this time to C.S. Marítimo in Portugal. However, he didn't play any games there. He soon returned to Spain. In January 2009, he joined UD Salamanca, another team in the second division.

Success with Hércules CF

In July 2009, Rodri left Deportivo and signed a contract with Hércules CF, still in the second division. This was a great move for him!

In his first year with Hércules, he had his best season ever. He scored four goals in 38 matches. His team, Hércules, earned promotion back to the top Spanish league after 13 years!

Playing in Russia and Belgium

Rodri played 13 games for Hércules in the 2010–11 season. He often played when other defenders were injured or suspended.

In March 2011, he moved to Russia to play for FC Spartak Moscow. He signed a one-year contract with them.

After his contract with Spartak ended, Rodri returned to Spain. On August 31, 2012, he joined Rayo Vallecano.

Later, he played for two years in Belgium with K.A.S. Eupen. After that, he continued his career in the lower leagues of Spanish football.
