Rodrigo de Villandrando was a talented painter from Spain who lived a long time ago, from 1588 to 1622. He was a special artist because he worked for the king of Spain, Philip III of Spain, as a court painter. This meant he painted portraits of the royal family and important people at the palace.

Rodrigo de Villandrando followed the painting styles of other famous Spanish artists like Alonso Sánchez Coello and Juan Pantoja de la Cruz. After Villandrando passed away in 1622, a young and very famous painter named Diego Velázquez from Sevilla got the chance to become a court painter for the king.
