A Look Back: The History of Roe & Co
The Original Thomas Street Distillery
Long ago, there was a very big factory called the Thomas Street Distillery. It was run by the Roe family. This factory was once the largest of its kind in Britain and Ireland.
At its busiest time, it made a huge amount of its product every year. This old factory was right across the street from the Guinness brewery. After many years, the original Roe factory closed down in 1926. Some of its buildings were later bought by Guinness.
The New Distillery Opens
In January 2017, a company called Diageo made an exciting announcement. Diageo is the company that makes Guinness. They said they would spend €25 million (about $27 million US dollars) to build a brand new factory.
This new factory would be built in an old power house building. This building is also on Thomas Street, very close to where the original Roe factory used to be. The new Roe & Co Distillery began making its products in the first half of 2019.
