Sir Roger William Cork (born March 31, 1947 – died October 21, 2002) was a British expert in accounting and business problems. He was also the 669th Lord Mayor of London, serving from 1996 to 1997.
Early Life and Education
Roger Cork was born on March 31, 1947, in Hatch End, Middlesex, England. His father was Sir Kenneth Cork, who was also a well-known accountant. Roger went to St Martin’s School in Northwood and later to Uppingham School.
Career and Public Service
Roger Cork followed in his father's footsteps in many ways. In 1983, he became an alderman for Tower ward, which is a special elected position in the City of London. He also served as the Sheriff of the City from 1992 to 1993. The Sheriff is an important role in the City of London's government.
He was the president of the Institute of Credit Management, an organization for people who manage credit and debt. From 1999 to 2000, Roger Cork was the Master of the Worshipful Company of World Traders. This is one of the many historic livery companies in the City of London, which are like old trade guilds.
Lord Mayor of London
Sir Roger Cork achieved a very high honor when he became the Lord Mayor of London. This is a special role, different from the Mayor of London, as it focuses on the historic financial district known as the City of London. He served as Lord Mayor from 1996 to 1997. For his public service, he was made a knight in the 1997 Birthday Honours.
Later Life
Sir Roger Cork passed away on October 21, 2002, when he was 55 years old.
