Sir Roger Geoffrey Gibbs (born October 13, 1934 – died October 3, 2018) was a very important British businessman. He was known for managing money and holding senior positions at big organizations. These included the famous Arsenal Football Club, the Wellcome Trust, and Fleming Family & Partners.
Early Life and Education
Roger Gibbs went to two well-known schools in England. He studied at Eton College and then at Millfield. These schools helped him prepare for his future career.
His Work and Contributions
Sir Roger Gibbs started his career working with stocks and shares. He later became the Chairman of a company called Gerrard and National Discount Co Ltd.
He was also a director at Arsenal Football Club for a long time. He joined the club's board in 1980 and stayed until 2005. He officially retired from this role in June 2006.
One of his most important roles was being the Chairman of the Wellcome Trust. This is a very large charity that supports health research around the world. Sir Roger led the Wellcome Trust from 1983 to 1999. He also spent time helping with charity work for the St Paul's Cathedral Foundation.
Special Recognition
In 1994, Roger Gibbs was made a knight. This means he was given the title "Sir" by the Queen for his important work and contributions.
In 2004, the Wellcome Trust decided to honor him in a special way. They named their new main building in London the Gibbs Building. This was to show how much they appreciated his significant help with the trust's finances.
Personal Life
Sir Roger Gibbs was the fourth son of Sir Geoffrey Gibbs and Lady Gibbs. His younger brother, Christopher Gibbs, was known for being an antiques dealer and collector. Roger Gibbs married his wife, Jane, on September 21, 2005. He passed away on October 3, 2018, when he was 83 years old.
