Roger Gilla Dubh Ó Seachnasaigh facts for kids
Sir Ruadhri Gilla Dubh Ó Seachnasaigh, also known as Roger Gilla Duff O'Shaughnessy, was an important leader in Ireland. He was the Chief of his family from 1583 to 1650.
Life of Sir Roger O'Shaughnessy
Sir Roger O'Shaughnessy was married to Elis Lynch. They had a son named Sir Dermot, who became his heir. They also had a daughter named Gyles. After Elis passed away, Sir Roger married Julia MacCarthy. They did not have any children together.
A painting of Sir Roger shows him wearing his armor. This painting can still be seen today at Kilkenny Castle.
It is believed that Sir Roger built Fiddaun Castle. He was the first person known to live there, and the castle was not mentioned before his time.
Sir Roger's Daughter, Gyles
Gyles Ni Seachnasaigh was Sir Roger's daughter. She married a man named Donal III O'Donovan from County Cork. Gyles and Donal had four sons: Donal IV O'Donovan, Cornelius, Morogh, and Richard. The current Lords of Clancahill are related to Gyles through her son Donal IV.
Gyles was still alive in May 1676. Her family's records, called pedigrees, did not always mention her. This might be because she moved away and became part of a different family. However, the O'Donovan family made sure that poets in their area celebrated Gyles. A special poem was even written about her by an Ó Dálaigh.
