Sir Roger Hill (born June 19, 1642 – died December 29, 1729) was an important English person from Denham Place in Buckinghamshire. He owned a lot of land and worked for the king or queen (a "courtier"). He was also a "Whig politician," which means he was part of a political group and helped make laws in the English and later the British Parliament from 1679 to 1722.

Early Life and Family

Roger Hill was the oldest son of Roger Hill of Poundisford Park in Somerset. His mother was Abigail Gurdon. He went to Jesus College, Cambridge in 1658 and studied law at the Inner Temple in 1657. He became a lawyer in 1666.

Roger planned to become a lawyer like his father. However, his father passed away in 1667. Roger then inherited the family estate at Poundisford.

Marriage and New Home

In 1667, Roger Hill married Abigail Lockey. Her father was John Lockey from Holmshill, Hertfordshire. Roger was made a knight in July 1668. This meant he was given the title "Sir."

From 1668 to 1685, he worked as a "Gentleman of the Privy Chamber." This was a special job helping the King. In 1670, he bought a large property called Denham from the Bowyer family. He then rebuilt the house there between 1688 and 1701. He sold his old family home, Poundisford, to a retired doctor named Simon Welman. Roger Hill was also chosen to be the High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire from 1672 to 1673. This was an important local government role.

Political Career

Sir Roger Hill was elected to Parliament several times. He represented the area of Amersham from 1679 to 1681.

He was elected again for Wendover in the 1702 election. However, he lost his seat after a special review. He was elected once more in the 1705 English general election and served in Parliament until 1722.

Later Life and Legacy

Sir Roger Hill lived a long life. He passed away on December 29, 1729, when he was 87 years old. He was buried at Denham church.

He had two sons and two daughters. His oldest son, also named Roger, inherited Denham Place. However, his son passed away soon after him.
