Roger Hoy's Football Journey

Starting Out at Tottenham

Roger Hoy was born in Poplar, a part of London. He showed great football talent when he played for his school teams. Roger started his youth career at Tottenham Hotspur in 1964. He played as a full-back at first.

In May 1965, he signed a professional contract with Spurs. At the same time, he changed his position to centre-half. Roger played his first league game against Sunderland in March 1966. He played 15 senior games for Tottenham, often filling in for the famous Wales player Mike England. He left the club in 1968.

Time at Crystal Palace

On September 26, 1968, Roger joined Crystal Palace. That season, he played 26 games and scored 3 goals. Crystal Palace also made history by reaching the top division of English football for the very first time!

Roger started the 1969–70 season in the top league as a first-choice player. However, he later lost his starting spot to David Payne in October. Roger still played many different roles for Palace that season. He even wore five different shirt numbers! He finished the season with 28 appearances, scoring three times. He scored the winning goal in the last game of the season against Manchester City. This important goal saved the club from being moved down to a lower league. Roger also scored a powerful header in an FA Cup game against Chelsea.

Later Football Clubs

In June 1970, Roger Hoy signed with Luton Town. He played 32 games in the 1970–71 season but did not score any goals. In 1971, he moved to Cardiff City. He played 16 games over the next two seasons there, again without scoring.

In 1973, Roger moved into non-league football. This means he played for teams outside the main professional leagues. He played for Bath City F.C. and then Dagenham. He finished his football career at Dagenham, which later became Dagenham and Redbridge.

Life Off the Field

After his football career, Roger Hoy moved to New South Wales, Australia, with his family. There, he started working for a church. He also continued to play football for a team in Palm Beach.

Roger passed away at the age of 71 on November 9, 2018, after battling a serious illness.
