Roger Jones (born around 1691, died 1741) was a Welsh politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is an important part of the United Kingdom's government, from 1713 to 1722.

Early Life and Education

Roger Jones was the only son of Edward Jones, who was also a Member of Parliament. Roger was from a place called Buckland in Breconshire, Wales.

When he was 15 years old, in 1707, Roger started studying at Balliol College, Oxford, which is a famous university. In the same year, he also began studying law at the Inner Temple in London.

Political Career

Roger Jones became a Member of Parliament (often called an MP) in 1713. An MP is someone chosen by people in an area to represent them in the government. He represented the Welsh town of Brecon after a general election.

He was chosen again as the MP for Brecon in 1715 without anyone running against him. In 1722, he decided to leave his seat in Brecon. He then tried to become the MP for the wider area of Breconshire, but he did not win that election.

Supporting the Arts

Beyond politics, Roger Jones was very interested in music. He was one of the first people to support the Royal Academy of Music. This group helped create an opera company in London. This company asked famous composers like Handel and Bononcini to write many new operas.

Family Life

Around 1714, Roger Jones married Dorothy Cornish. Her father, Henry Cornish, was a merchant in London. Dorothy passed away in 1735. Later, Roger married his second wife, Eleanor. Roger Jones died in 1741. He did not have any children from either of his marriages.
