Becoming a Knight

It's not completely clear exactly when Roger de Northwode became a knight. We know he was serving as a steward for the Archbishop of Canterbury in September 1265. At that time, he was also described as a knight helping the king in Kent.

Another record suggests he might have become a knight in September 1275. So, he definitely received his knighthood sometime between 1265 and 1275. After becoming a knight, he took on many public duties.

Important Roles and Duties

Sir Roger de Northwode held several key positions. He was appointed the Constable of Dover Castle, a very important fortress, and held this job until about 1259.

He also served as the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. This was a powerful role, as the Cinque Ports were a group of coastal towns that provided ships for the king's navy. He held this position sometime between 1255 and 1258.

Helping the Community

Sir Roger de Northwode also cared about his community. He showed great interest in the old monastery of St. Sexburge, which had been neglected for a long time. He helped fix it up and gave money to support it. Because of his help, people at the monastery even called him "the restorer of that house."
