Roger Stafford, 6th Baron Stafford, was an English nobleman. He was born around 1572. Roger was the son of Richard Stafford. His grandfather was Henry Stafford, 1st Baron Stafford. Roger had to give up his noble title in 1637. This happened because he was very poor.

Roger Stafford's Early Life

Roger Stafford was born in 1572. His parents were Richard Stafford and Mary Corbet. Mary was the daughter of John Corbet. Roger also had a younger sister named Jane. She was born around 1581.

When Roger was young, people sometimes called him Floyde or Fludd. The reason for this nickname is not known. He might have worked as a servant for his uncle, George Corbet. George was his mother's brother.

Losing the Baron Stafford Title

The title of Baron Stafford was passed down through the family. When Henry Stafford, the 5th Baron, died, he had no children. The title was meant for male heirs of Henry Stafford, 1st Baron Stafford. Roger was the next male heir in line.

Roger was 65 years old when the 5th Baron died. He asked the Parliament to recognize him as the new Baron. A group was formed to look into his claim. This group was led by Henry Montagu, 1st Earl of Manchester.

King Charles I's Decision

Roger's request eventually reached King Charles I. The King decided not to give Roger the title. This was because Roger was very poor. The King's decision said that Roger had no family wealth. He also had no other money or land.

So, Roger had to give up all his claims to the title. He signed a document on December 7, 1639. He received £800 for giving up his title. Today, people believe that forcing him to give up the title was against the law.

Roger Stafford never married. He died in 1640. After his death, his family line for the title ended. The title of Baron Stafford was created again later that year. It was given to Sir William Howard. Sir William had married Mary Stafford. She was the sister of the 5th Baron.
