Early Life and Education
Roger Sweetman was born in Dublin, Ireland. His father, Hugh Sweetman, was a successful brewer. Roger went to Downside School for his education.
After school, he studied law and became a lawyer in 1898. Besides his studies, Roger was also a good tennis player. He won the East of Ireland championship in 1905. He even played in the famous Wimbledon Championships in 1902.
Joining Sinn Féin
Roger Sweetman's cousin, John Sweetman, was also involved in politics. John was an early leader of the Sinn Féin party. When John decided not to run for election in 1918, Roger stepped in.
Roger Sweetman was elected to represent Wexford North in the 1918 election. Like other Sinn Féin members, he chose not to sit in the British Parliament in London. Instead, he joined the first meeting of the First Dáil in Dublin in January 1919. The Dáil was the new parliament of the Irish Republic.
Political Views and Resignation
In November 1920, during the Irish War of Independence, Roger Sweetman spoke out. He publicly asked for peace talks and a ceasefire. He also disagreed with some actions taken by the Irish Republican Army.
Because of his strong opinions, he resigned from his role as a Teachta Dála (a member of the Dáil) in January 1921. He felt he had a "radical disagreement" with the other politicians. He did not run in the next election. After leaving politics, Roger focused on farming, especially promoting a type of cow called Friesian cattle for dairy farming.
Family Life
In 1904, Roger Sweetman married Katharine Mary Kelly. They had a large family with 11 children. One of their sons, Edmund Sweetman, also became a politician and served as a Senator.
Roger's nephew, Gerard Sweetman, later became the Minister for Finance for Ireland.
