Roger d'Abetot lived a long time ago, around the 1100s. He was a powerful person in the county of Worcestershire in England. His main job was being the Sheriff, which was like a chief officer for the king in that area.

Roger followed in his father's footsteps. His father, Urse d'Abetot, was the Sheriff before him. Roger also took over the care of Worcester Castle. This was another important job he got from his father.

It's also thought that Roger might have been a "constable" for King Henry I. A constable was a high-ranking official in the king's household. Roger also inherited a large area of land called the feudal barony of Salwarpe. This land was also in Worcestershire.

Why He Left England

Around the years 1110 or 1114, King Henry I sent Roger away from England. This is called being "banished." Because he was banished, Roger lost his important job as Sheriff. He also lost all his lands.

A writer from that time, William of Malmesbury, said why Roger was banished. It was because Roger was involved in a very serious incident concerning a royal official.

What Happened Next?

After Roger was banished, his job as Sheriff went to Osbert d'Abetot. Osbert might have been Roger's uncle. Eventually, the job ended up with Roger's brother-in-law, a nobleman named Walter de Beauchamp.
