Roland Erasmus Philipps (born February 27, 1890 – died July 7, 1916) was an important writer and a top leader in the Scout movement. He was the second son of a noble family. He went to Twyford School, Winchester College, and New College, Oxford for his education.

Roland Philipps: A Scout Hero

Roland Philipps became a Scout leader early in his life. In July 1912, he was made an assistant district commissioner for East London. He helped set up special talks about Scout Law in 1912 and 1913.

His Important Work with Scouts

In 1913, Roland became a commissioner for northeast London. By November 1913, he was in charge of all Scouting in East London. He wrote several books about Scouting. Some of these books were published after he passed away.

Serving in World War I

Roland Philipps joined the British Army as an officer during the First World War. He showed great bravery in a battle called the Hohenzollern Redoubt. For his actions, he received the Military Cross, which is a special award for courage. He was a temporary captain with the 9th Battalion of The Royal Fusiliers.

His Sacrifice in Battle

Roland Philipps was killed on July 7, 1916. He was leading his soldiers during a major fight called the Battle of the Somme. He is buried in France at the Aveluy Communal Cemetery Extension. His gravestone says he was a "COMMISSIONER OF BOY SCOUTS FOR NORTH EAST AND EAST LONDON". Roland's only brother also died in the war in 1915.

A Lasting Legacy

Roland Philipps left his home, Roland House, to the Scouts of East London in his will. This house, located at 29, Stepney Green in the East End of London, became a very important place for Scouting in London and Scouting in the United Kingdom.

Roland House: A Special Place

The house was known as "The House on the Green." It became a memorial to Roland Philipps. It served as a home for several Scout Leaders from groups in East London. It was also a place for visitors to stay, the main office for a Rover Scout Crew, and a Scout Shop. Roland House was sold in 1983.

His Name Lives On

A Scout Group in Mexico is named after Roland Philipps. They have written a detailed story about his life. A blues musician named Todd Sharpville was also named after Roland Erasmus Philipps.
