The Story of Roller Girl
The book follows Astrid, a fifth-grader, as she faces big changes in her life. She learns about friendship, trying new things, and finding out who she really is.
A Night at the Roller Derby
Astrid's mom often takes her and her best friend, Nicole, to "Evenings of Cultural Enrichment." These events are usually a bit boring or confusing for the girls. But one night, they go to a thrilling roller derby match! They watch teams like the Oregon City Rollergirls and the Rose City Rollers compete. Astrid is amazed by the speed and power of the skaters.
Summer Plans Change
After seeing the roller derby, Astrid is super excited. She asks her mom if she can join the Junior Roller Derby Camp that summer. She just assumes Nicole will join with her, because they always do everything together. But Nicole has other plans. She decides to go to dance camp instead, and even worse, she goes with Rachel, who is Astrid's rival! This makes Astrid feel left out and a little sad.
New Friends and Challenges
Astrid goes to roller derby camp by herself. It's a big change from always being with Nicole. She starts to wonder if their friendship will last. At camp, Astrid meets a new friend named Zoey. Zoey is also passionate about roller derby.
However, learning to skate for roller derby is much harder than Astrid expected. She struggles with her skills and feels frustrated. She also deals with feelings of jealousy, especially when it comes to making the team. The story shows how Astrid works through these challenges, learns to believe in herself, and discovers the true meaning of friendship.
