The Archdiocese of Ottawa–Cornwall is a special area within the Catholic Church. It covers parts of Ontario, Canada. This archdiocese also helps to guide other nearby Catholic areas called dioceses. These include Hearst, Pembroke, and Timmins.
On May 6, 2020, Pope Francis made a big change. He combined two older areas, the Archdiocese of Ottawa and the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall. This created the new Archdiocese of Ottawa–Cornwall.

A Brief History of the Archdiocese
The story of this archdiocese began a long time ago. On June 25, 1847, it was first set up as the Diocese of Bytown. Bytown was the old name for Ottawa.
Later, on June 14, 1860, its name changed to the Diocese of Ottawa. Then, on June 8, 1886, it became an archdiocese. This means it became a more important and larger area.
As of 2004, this area served many people. It had about 400,000 Catholics. There were also many priests and religious people working there.
Who Leads the Archdiocese?
The archdiocese is led by an Archbishop. This person is like a chief leader for the Catholic community in that area.
Past Archbishops of Ottawa
Many important leaders have guided the archdiocese over the years. Here are some of them:
- Joseph-Eugène-Bruno Guigues (1847–1874) was the first leader.
- Joseph-Thomas Duhamel (1874–1909)
- Terrence Prendergast, S.J. (2007–2020) was the last Archbishop of Ottawa before the change.
Archbishops of Ottawa-Cornwall
After the two areas combined in 2020, new leaders took charge:
- Terrence Prendergast (2020) was the first Archbishop of the new combined area.
- Marcel Damphousse (2020–present) is the current Archbishop. He helps lead the Catholic community today.
