The Roman kilns of El Rinconcillo were ancient ovens used by the Romans. They are located in the city of Algeciras, Spain. These kilns were part of a large factory complex called Portus Albus.

This factory made containers for transporting goods. It also produced other ceramic items for homes. These products were sent to the nearby Roman city of Iulia Traducta.

Discovery of the Kilns

The kilns were found in 1966 by an archaeologist named Manuel Sotomayor. They were discovered very close to the Playa de El Rinconcillo beach. The site is only about 300 meters from the sand.

What the Kilns Look Like

The archaeological site has two kilns joined together. They form one large unit. The walls of the kilns are made from ceramic and mud bricks.

Inside, a central column supports the main arches. Eight more arches line the walls. These structures are made of adobe, which is a type of sun-dried brick. They have narrow holes to let air move around inside.

An Important Historical Site

These Roman kilns are very important for history. Because of their historical value, they were declared a Bien de Interés Cultural site in 1969. This means they are a protected cultural heritage site in Spain.
