Roman mausoleum of Córdoba.

The Roman mausoleum of Córdoba is a very old building in the Jardines de la Victoria, in the city of Córdoba, southern Spain. It's a special kind of tomb shaped like a cylinder. This monument was part of a group of tombs from the time of the Roman Republic, built around the 1st century AD. People found it in 1993 when they were digging for old things.

What is the Roman Mausoleum?

This ancient tomb has a special room inside called a chamber tomb. This room was where a container, probably an Urn holding ashes, would have been kept. You can also see parts of its base, decorative edges (called cornices), and a wall on top with a jagged shape (a crenellated parapet).

It's quite unusual to find a Roman mausoleum like this in Spain. Experts think an architect from Italy might have designed it. This is because it looks similar to other mausoleums found in Rome and other parts of Italy. Its large size also suggests that it belonged to a very rich and important family.

Where is it Located?

The mausoleum is found close to an old Roman road. This road used to connect the ancient city of Córdoba with another important city called Hispalis (which is now Seville). The road left Córdoba through its western gate, known as "Porta Principalis Sinistra" (or Puerta de Gallegos). When archaeologists found the mausoleum, they also found parts of the old pavement from this Roman road.
