The Romanzo Kingman House was an old house in Kingman, Maine. It was built in 1871. This house was special because it was the fanciest building in the small town from the 1800s. It belonged to Romanzo Kingman, who the town is named after. He owned a big leather factory called a tannery.
The house was added to a list of important places, the National Register of Historic Places, in 1982. Sadly, a fire destroyed the house around 2005. It was removed from the historic list in 2020.
About the Kingman House
The Kingman House was on Main Street in Kingman. This area is a small, rural community in Penobscot County. The house had two floors and a central chimney. Its outside walls were made of clapboard.
The front of the house faced southwest. It had three sections, with the main door on the left. A small porch with square posts covered the entrance. The house had fancy details like a decorative trim under the roof. Windows on the first floor had pointed tops. Windows on the second floor had flat tops. A two-story part of the house connected it to a carriage barn.
History of the House and Town
Romanzo Kingman and Francis Shaw started a tannery in Kingman in the 1860s. A tannery is a factory where animal hides are turned into leather. For a while, their tannery was one of the biggest in the country. It was a very important business for the town. The tannery was destroyed in a large explosion in the 1920s.
Kingman and Shaw built this house in 1871–72. It was the only house in the small community that stood out for its design. Romanzo Kingman moved away a few years later. He opened another tannery in Wisconsin. When the community became an official town, it was named Kingman in his honor. His house was destroyed by fire around 2005.
