Meet the California Mistmaiden

Where Does It Grow?

The California mistmaiden loves places that are damp and wet. You can find it growing on coastal bluffs, which are cliffs near the ocean. It also thrives in mountain forests where the ground stays moist.

What Does It Look Like?

This plant can grow up to 40 centimeters (about 16 inches) tall. It grows from a network of brown, hairy tubers, which are like small underground storage parts. Around the bottom of the plant, you'll see many leaves. These leaves have rounded blades with even lobes, and they sit on stalks called petioles that can be several centimeters long.

Its Flowers and Fruit

The flowers of the California mistmaiden grow in a curving cluster called a cyme. Each flower sits on a small, upright stalk called a pedicel. The flower itself has a funnel-shaped part called a corolla, which can be just over a centimeter long. This corolla is surrounded by pointed leaf-like parts called sepals. The corolla is usually white with a bright yellow center. After the flower blooms, it produces a fruit that is a small capsule, up to a centimeter long.
