The Estadio Romelio Martínez, or Romelio Martínez Stadium, is a sports stadium in Barranquilla, Colombia. It is found at 72nd street and 46th Avenue. This stadium can hold up to 8,600 people.
For many years, the Romelio Martínez was the main stadium in Barranquilla. This was true until 1986, when the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez was built. Today, the Romelio Martínez is the home field for the Barranquilla F.C. soccer team. This team plays in the Colombian second division.
History of the Stadium
The idea for the stadium began in 1932. Barranquilla was chosen to host the National Games of Colombia that year. The stadium was built on the land where the "Estadio Juana de Arco" used to be.
The stadium was finished in 1934. It was first called "Estadio Municipal," which means "Municipal Stadium." When it first opened, it could hold 10,000 spectators. The stadium has a special wooden structure that supports its roof. Its building style is known as Art Deco.
In 1946, the Romelio Martínez Stadium was an important place. It hosted the V Central American and Caribbean Games.
When professional football started in Barranquilla in 1948, the stadium became very popular. Many fans of the local team, Junior de Barranquilla, wanted to watch the games. So many people came that the stadium often became too crowded. Fans would even line up hours before the games started to get in.
