Building a New Stadium
The idea for this stadium started in 1932. Barranquilla was getting ready to host the National Games of Colombia. A new stadium was needed for these big sports events. It was built on the land where the "Estadio Juana de Arco" used to be.
The stadium was finished in 1934. It was first called "Estadio Municipal," which means Municipal Stadium. When it first opened, it could hold 10,000 fans. The main grandstand had a wooden roof structure. The building style was Art Deco, which was very popular back then.
Hosting Big Games
The Romelio Martínez Stadium has hosted many important events. In 1935, it was the site for the National Games of Colombia. Later, in 1946, it hosted the V Central American and Caribbean Games. These were major international sports competitions.
Soccer's Popularity Grows
Professional soccer started in Barranquilla in 1948. The local team, Junior de Barranquilla, became very popular. So many fans wanted to watch the games. The stadium often became too crowded. People would line up for hours just to get in. This showed how much the city loved its soccer team.
