Ron Stone (born April 6, 1936 – died May 13, 2008) was a well-known American news anchor. He worked at KPRC-TV in Houston, Texas for 20 years, from 1972 to 1992. Many people in Houston thought he was the most popular news anchor the city had ever seen. After his time on TV, he became the president of Stonefilms, Inc., a company that makes videos and films.

Early Life and Education

Ron Stone went to college and earned degrees from East Central University and Houston Baptist University. After finishing his studies, he started his career as a broadcaster. He even worked for the National Football League and the Southwest Conference, talking about sports.

Career Highlights

Starting in Television News

Ron Stone was born in Hanna, Oklahoma. After college, he worked in radio and TV in smaller towns in Oklahoma. In 1961, while working at KVOO-TV in Tulsa, Oklahoma, another famous news person, Dan Rather, noticed his talent.

Stone began his main TV news career at KHOU-TV in Houston, which is a CBS channel. He worked there for almost ten years. For a short time in 1967, he went to New York City to write and report news for the NBC Radio Network. In 1972, Stone moved back to Houston to KPRC-TV, an NBC channel. He became an anchor for their news show. During his time at KPRC-TV, he worked with other anchors like Paula Zahn and Linda Lorelle.

After News Anchoring

In 1992, Ron Stone stopped being a full-time news anchor. He then started his own company, Stonefilms, Inc., with his son. He also hosted a cultural TV show called The Eyes of Texas on KPRC-TV. He hosted this show from 1979 until 1999.

On May 21, 2002, Ron Stone returned to anchor the news for one special evening at KPRC-TV. He did this with veteran meteorologist Doug Johnson.

Ron Stone lived with renal cell carcinoma, a type of cancer. He often gave inspiring speeches about how to deal with cancer. He passed away from cancer when he was 72 years old.

Ron Stone wrote three books about the history of Texas:

He also taught at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, where he was an Artist in Residence in the Communications Department.
