Roncador Cay is a small island located in the western Caribbean Sea. It is part of the Roncador Bank. This tiny island is found off the coast of Central America. It is about 150 kilometers (93 miles) east-northeast of Providencia Island.
History of Roncador Cay
Roncador Cay has an interesting past. On February 2, 1894, a famous ship called the USS Kearsarge ran aground. It got stuck on a reef near the cay. This ship belonged to the United States Navy. The damage was so bad that the ship could not be saved. The Navy declared it lost.
For many years, both Colombia and the United States claimed Roncador Cay. They both believed the island was theirs. However, in 1972, the United States gave up its claim. This was part of a special agreement, or treaty, between the two countries. Now, Roncador Cay is officially part of Colombia.
