Mercury Thermometer
A thermometer uses mercury to show the room temperature.

Room temperature is a common term for the temperature inside a building or room. It's not a single exact number. Instead, it describes a temperature that feels normal and comfortable for most people. Think of it as the usual warmth or coolness you feel indoors.

What is a Comfortable Room Temperature?

The best room temperature can be different for everyone. It depends on what you are doing and where you live. For example, in the UK, experts suggest that a good temperature for your living room is around 21 °C (70 °F). For a bedroom, 18 °C (64.4 °F) is often recommended. This cooler temperature helps you sleep better.

However, if you live in a hot country near the equator, your comfortable room temperature might be higher. It could be around 30 °C (86 °F). This is because people in different climates get used to different temperatures.

Room Temperature in Science

In science, "room temperature" is used more precisely. It usually means a temperature between 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. The average is often considered to be 23 °C (about 73.4 degrees Fahrenheit). Scientists also use the Kelvin scale, where this range is about 293 to 298 Kelvins. Sometimes, for easy calculations, scientists might just use 20 °C or 300 K.

Why Room Temperature Matters in Experiments

The temperature of the air around scientific equipment can sometimes affect experiments. For example, some tests need to be done at a very specific temperature. But other experiments are not affected by small changes in temperature. When scientists say something was done at "room temperature," it means they didn't heat or cool the equipment. It was just at the normal temperature of the lab. This tells other scientists that temperature wasn't a special factor in their results.
