Rory P. MacCabe is an important Irish judge. He has been a judge of the High Court since January 2022. He also leads the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission. Before this, he was a judge in the Circuit Court from 2007 to 2022. He also worked as a lawyer and for the government.
Early Career in Law
Rory MacCabe started his career working for the Irish government. He studied public administration. In 1984, he became a barrister. A barrister is a type of lawyer who argues cases in court. He became a senior counsel in 1999. This means he was a very experienced lawyer. He worked on many different types of legal cases. These included cases about employment, personal injuries, and other civil matters.
He also advised David Andrews. Mr. Andrews was the Minister for Foreign Affairs at the time. Rory MacCabe helped him with matters related to Europe. In 2001, he was appointed to the Refugee Appeals Tribunal. This group handles appeals from people seeking protection in Ireland.
Becoming a Judge
Circuit Court Judge
Rory MacCabe became a judge of the Circuit Court in May 2007. The Circuit Court handles many different types of cases. These include serious criminal cases and civil disputes. He heard cases about various legal issues. He also dealt with cases about health and safety rules.
He was part of a group that helped create rules for sentencing. This group was part of the Judicial Council of Ireland. He also led a committee about technology for judges. In 2008, he chaired a group for the Irish Sports Council.
High Court and GSOC Leadership
In December 2021, Rory MacCabe was chosen for a new role. He was nominated to lead the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission. This group looks into complaints about the police (Garda Síochána). To take on this important role, he was appointed to the High Court. He became a High Court judge in January 2022. He also started his role as the chairperson of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission in January 2022.
