Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Rory Nugent (born in 1952) is an American explorer and writer. He is known for his exciting adventures and for searching for mysterious animals. From 1988 to 2004, he lived in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

The Life of an Explorer

Rory Nugent was born in New York. After finishing college at Williams College in 1975, he decided to explore the world. He started by working on different kinds of ships, traveling across the seas.

Sailing the Atlantic Ocean

Rory is a very skilled sailor. He sailed across the Atlantic Ocean by himself four times! These were amazing solo journeys. On his fifth trip, his boat, a catamaran, turned over. He was rescued five days later, showing his incredible survival skills.

From Explorer to Writer

In 1992, Rory started working as a foreign correspondent. This means he traveled to different countries to report on events for magazines. He wrote for Men's Journal and later for Spin. He stopped working as a journalist in 2002 to focus on writing his own books.

Searching for Hidden Animals

Rory Nugent is also very interested in a field called cryptozoology. This is the study of animals that are thought to exist but haven't been officially proven or found by science.

Expeditions for Rare Creatures

In the mid-1980s, Rory went on solo expeditions to find two very special creatures:

  • The pink-headed duck: He searched for this rare bird along the Brahmaputra River. Many people thought this duck was extinct, meaning it no longer existed.
  • The Mokele-mbembe: He also looked for this mysterious creature in the Congo. The Mokele-mbembe is described as a large, dinosaur-like animal that lives in the deep jungles.

Unconfirmed Sightings

Rory Nugent has said that he might have seen both the pink-headed duck and the Mokele-mbembe during his trips. However, these sightings have not been officially confirmed by other scientists or explorers. He wrote non-fiction books about each of these exciting expeditions.

The Mokele-mbembe Photographs

In 1985, Rory took some photographs that he believed showed the Mokele-mbembe. But some people have said these pictures were not clear enough. One photo, for example, was described as looking like a log floating far away in a lake, rather than a creature. Despite this, Rory's adventures show his passion for exploring the unknown.
