Rory Nugent (born in 1952) is an American explorer and writer. He lived in New Bedford, Massachusetts from 1988 to 2004.

About Rory Nugent

Rory Nugent was born in New York. After finishing college at Williams College in 1975, he started working on ships. He sailed on large cargo ships called freighters. He also sailed on "canvas-fliers," which are boats with sails.

Nugent sailed across the Atlantic Ocean by himself four times. On his fifth trip, his catamaran (a type of boat) turned over. He was rescued five days later.

In 1992, Rory Nugent became a foreign correspondent. This means he reported news from other countries for magazines. He worked for Men's Journal and then Spin. In 2002, he stopped working as a journalist. He wanted to focus on writing his third book.

Exploring for Hidden Animals

Rory Nugent is also interested in cryptozoology. This is the study of animals that people think might exist but haven't been proven yet.

In the mid-1980s, Nugent went on solo trips to find two mysterious creatures. He looked for the pink-headed duck near the Brahmaputra River. He also searched for Mokele-mbembe in the Congo. Mokele-mbembe is a creature said to look like a dinosaur.

Some people say he might have seen both creatures. However, his sightings have never been officially confirmed. He wrote a non-fiction book about each of these expeditions.

Rory Nugent took photos in 1985 that were said to be of Mokele-mbembe. But these photos have been questioned. One picture was described as just a faraway photo of a log floating in a lake.
