Ros Asquith is a talented British artist. She draws cartoons, writes books for kids, and illustrates them. She also used to be a journalist.

Ros started her career as a graphic designer and photographer. Later, she worked for many magazines and newspapers, often writing about theatre. For over 20 years, she has been a cartoonist for The Guardian newspaper. Ros Asquith is famous for her popular Teenage Worrier book series. She has written more than 60 books for young readers!

Ros Asquith was born in Hove, Sussex, England. She grew up in London. She went to Camberwell School of Art to study graphics and illustration. There, she earned a special degree.

In 1972, she started working as a graphic designer. She was also the official photographer for a place called the Almost Free Theatre. Her photography work led her to write for The Observer newspaper. She even became a deputy theatre critic there.

Ros's Journalism Career

Ros Asquith continued her work in journalism. She wrote theatre listings and reviews for Time Out magazine. Then, she became the theatre editor for City Limits from 1981 to 1990. She also wrote a diary column for TV Times.

Later, she became a cartoonist for The Guardian newspaper. She was especially known for her comic strip called "Doris." This comic ran for over ten years! Years after The Guardian stopped publishing "Doris," Ros created new cartoons featuring Doris. In these new comics, Doris is a cleaning lady who sees how society has changed.

Books for Young People

While still drawing cartoons, Ros Asquith has written over 60 books. Many of these books are for teenagers. Her most popular book series include Teenage Worrier, Fibby Libby, Girl Writer, and Trixie.

Another one of her books, Letters from an Alien Schoolboy, was even nominated for the Roald Dahl Funny Book Prize. Ros also illustrates many picture books. She is known for showing and celebrating all kinds of people in her drawings.

In an interview in 2021, Ros talked about her book My Mum the Handyman. She said she tries to draw characters that break old ideas about people. For example, if she needs to draw a judge, she will always draw a woman. She also tries to show families that are not always white or the traditional mom, dad, and kids setup.
