Ros Asquith's Journey

Ros Asquith was born in Hove, Sussex, England. She grew up in London. She studied art at Camberwell School of Art. In 1972, she started working as a graphic designer. She was also the official photographer for a theatre company called Inter-Action.

Early Career in Journalism

Her photography work led her to write for The Observer newspaper. She became a deputy theatre critic there. This means she wrote reviews about plays. Later, she wrote about theatre for Time Out magazine. She also became the theatre editor for City Limits. She even wrote a diary column for TV Times.

Becoming a Cartoonist

Ros Asquith later became a cartoonist for The Guardian newspaper. She became very famous for her cartoon strip called "Doris". This cartoon ran for more than ten years! Doris was a cleaning lady who saw how society was changing. Years later, Ros Asquith drew new "Doris" cartoons for UCL's European Institute.

Writing for Young People

While still drawing cartoons, Ros Asquith has written over 60 books. Many of these books are for teenagers. Her most popular series include Teenage Worrier and Fibby Libby. Other well-known books are Girl Writer and Trixie. Her book Letters from an Alien Schoolboy was even nominated for the Roald Dahl Funny Book Prize.

Ros Asquith is also known for her illustrations. She likes to show many different kinds of people and families in her drawings. In an interview, she said she tries to draw characters that break old ideas. For example, she might draw a woman judge. She also tries to show families that are not always white or the usual "mom, dad, kids" setup. She celebrates how everyone is unique.
