The Rose's rain frog (Breviceps rosei) is a special kind of frog. It belongs to a family of frogs called Brevicipitidae. You might also hear it called Rose's short-headed frog or the sand rain frog.
These frogs are found only in a specific area. They live in the sandy coastal parts of south-western South Africa. This means they are endemic to that region.
Rose's rain frogs spend most of their lives underground. They dig nests in the sandy soil. This is also where they lay their eggs. They only come to the surface when it rains a lot.
These frogs cannot swim, so you will never find them in water. Their babies are unique too! Instead of hatching as Tadpoles, the tiny frogs develop fully inside their eggs. They hatch as complete, tiny froglets.

Where Rose's Rain Frogs Live
Rose's rain frogs live in several different places. Their natural homes include areas with shrubs and bushes. This includes a special type of plant area called Fynbos in South Africa.
They also live near sandy beaches and in areas where people farm. You can even find them in gardens and towns. This shows they are very good at adapting to different environments.
Their living space is becoming smaller because of human activities. However, these frogs are very good at surviving. They are still found in many places, even with less habitat.
Different Kinds of Rose's Rain Frogs
There are two main types, or subspecies, of Rose's rain frog. Each one lives in a different coastal area.
Sand Rain Frog
The sand rain frog (Breviceps rosei rosei) lives on the west coast of the Western Cape. You can also find them on Robben Island, which is near Cape Town.
Eastern Rose Rain Frog
The eastern Rose rain frog (Breviceps rosei vansoni) lives on the south coast of the Western Cape. This means they are found further along the coast from their western relatives.
