Rosemary Murphy (born January 13, 1925 – died July 5, 2014) was a talented German-American actress. She performed in plays, movies, and TV shows. She was nominated for three Tony Awards for her stage work. She also received two Emmy Awards for her TV roles, winning one for her part in Eleanor and Franklin (1976).

Her Life and Acting Career
Rosemary Murphy was born in Munich, Germany, in 1925. Her parents were American. Her father, Robert Daniel Murphy, was a diplomat, which means he worked for his country to build relationships with other countries. Her family left Germany in 1939 because World War II was beginning.
Learning to Act
Rosemary Murphy later acted in French and German films. She studied at Manhattanville College and trained to be an actress at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.. She also studied in New York at the Neighborhood Playhouse and the Actors Studio. She learned from famous teachers like Sanford Meisner before starting her acting career.
On Stage
Rosemary Murphy first performed on stage in Germany in 1949. It was a play called Peer Gynt. She made her Broadway debut in New York City in 1950 in a play called The Tower Beyond Tragedy. She acted in about 15 Broadway shows. Her last Broadway performance was in Noël Coward's Waiting in the Wings in 1999.
In Movies and on TV
Murphy also had many roles in movies and on television. A famous role was playing Sara Delano Roosevelt in the TV mini-series Eleanor and Franklin (1976) and Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years (1977). She also played Maudie Atkinson in the movie To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). Another role was Callie Hacker in Walking Tall (1973). From 1974 to 1975, she played high-school principal Margaret Blumenthal in the TV series Lucas Tanner.
She also appeared in several soap operas. She was Nola Hollister #2 on The Secret Storm (1969–1970). In 1977, she was Maureen Teller Dalton on All My Children. In 1988, she played Loretta Fowler on Another World. The next year, she was Gretel Aldin #2 on As the World Turns.
Rosemary Murphy also appeared in episodes of popular TV shows like Columbo (1974) and Murder, She Wrote (1987).
Awards and Recognition
Rosemary Murphy won an Emmy Award for her role in Eleanor and Franklin. She also won a Clarence Derwent Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award. She was nominated for three Tony Awards for her work on stage.
Her Later Years
Rosemary Murphy passed away on July 5, 2014, in Manhattan, New York. She was 89 years old. She never married.
